THE VATICAN OBSERVATORY FEATURED ON TG2 MIZAR

On Saturday, May 9, the TG2 Mizar program dedicated a feature to the Vatican Observatory, including an interview with Father Gabriele Gionti and an account of the scientific activities of the Holy See’s Observatory.

The feature retraced the history of the Vatican Observatory, from its origins to its activities today, showing how the institution is engaged in international astronomical research through collaborations with universities and research centers around the world. Some of the Observatory’s principal fields of study were presented, including cosmology, galaxies, meteorites, stellar evolution and exoplanets, together with projects carried out at the observatories in Castel Gandolfo and Tucson, Arizona.

During the interview, Father Gionti, Deputy Director of the Vatican Observatory, also spoke about the value of dialogue between science and faith. Scientific research and faith are not, in fact, in conflict, but are two different and complementary ways of looking at reality and reflecting on the meaning of the universe. The study of the cosmos can also become an opportunity for wonder and reflection on the work of Creation.
